Many different forms of figurative language I used throughout the story to exhilarate the irony. The opening description of Ethan is full of ironic expressions. Figurative language is also used to the describe reactions to events in the story. The author is very descriptive in this short story. The use of figurative language aids in description of events, the setting, mood, and characters’ appearance and response. Edith Wharton, the author, use of literary devices allows the story to come alive and to also require the reader to think deeply about the true meanings. In the beginning the author describes how she became to know the protagonist, Ethan Frome. The narrator stated that Ethan was â€Å"the most striking figure in Starkfield, though he was but the ruin of a man†. This expression is very ironic. One can tell the beauty he once had, although he has had a hard life that has physically took a toll on him. â€Å"It was the careless powerful look he had, in spite of a lameness checking each step like the jerk of a chain.† The narrator is describing his appearance and the way Ethan walks. The fact the narrortar states that he has a careless and powerful looks contradicts the end of the statement. At the end of the statement, states that he walks abnormally, as if he is in pain or have some sort of physically problem that does not allow him to walk correctly. Irony is also found in the very in of this short story. Growing up, I always had a difficult time controlling my temper. I would experience erratic mood swings that escalated beyond what seemed appropriate, and I would handle stressful situations unfittingly. Throughout most of my teen years, I overlooked and dismissed the severity of my emotional troubles. It took three years to be thoroughly diagnosed with Bipolar â… ¡ Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. During those three years, I learned a lot about who I am, who I was to become, and the difficulties associated with the disorders I face. Through the course of my childhood years, I recall becoming unusually angry or anxious at simple, harmless occurrences. I felt closed off, trapped, and stuck in my own head as the environment around me†¦show more content†¦I stopped taking sports as seriously as I did, and I ended up losing college offers for softball. The next summer, I quit the sport entirely. I stopped doing many things that grabbed my attention. I felt as if nothin g mattered, and I truly did not care for anything. In October during my Junior year, I experienced a very extreme episode at the World Series Parade. It was very crowded, which consequently increased my anxiety levels. I then became angry and unstable. After a few minutes of random outbursts, my brother started influencing negative behavior and emotions, which caused me to impulsively punch him in the face. Shortly after this happened, I went home, still in an episode. I punched at my walls and kicked through the rails on the stairs in my house. No matter how hard I tried to calm myself down and control my actions, I could not. That night, I was taken to Marillac- a mental health treatment facility, and remained there for three days, receiving coping mechanisms and therapy. When I was discharged, I had to see many therapists and take many medications. Life after Marillac seemed to get better in result of therapy and medicine helping me deal with my disorders. A year passed, and I decided I was healthy enough to cold-turkey all of my medications and stop seeing my therapists. Everything was fine for a few months, until my mood swings came back. The two main characters are Jake and Elwood Blues. These brothers have consistently been in trouble with the law but find themselves searching for redemption. The quest begins when the Blues brothers set out to find and re-enlist the members of their old band. Unfortunately, for the Blues brothers, the other band members have steady jobs that they will not easily give up. The manipulative Jake and Elwood Blues soon convince them to come along. Finally, the band is together and they can begin to raise the money needed to save their childhood home, an orphanage. The Blues brothers may be classified as a sub-culture. A sub-culture may be defined as a group that participates within the dominant culture, while engaging in original and different behavior. One scene that demonstrates this behavior is when Jake and Elwood Blues try to re-enlist Matt Guitar Murphy. The brothers step into the soul food restaurant. An observant customer would notice the original attire of the brothers. Their clothes of black pants, black shoes, black tie and hat, and a plain white shirt. The outfit is not complete without their black sunglasses. Some would not consider this a type of specialized dress but the Blues brothers have not changed this outfit for countless years. Their clothing separates them from the norms of society and reflects their blunt behavior. A semiotic viewpoint could leave you with endless possibilities for the reasoning behind their dress. To prove that they are responsible, willing to conform, or businesslike. The meaning behind the message is hard to decipher. It could simply be a look for their band. The only attachment to their dress is the significant other that cared for them in the orphanage. This significant other, played by Cab Calloway, dressed exactly the same. So their specialized dress may show their loyalty, commitment, faith, and love for Cab Calloway. When Ray Charles plays the keyboard and sings Shake A Tail Feather one may find a simple example of semantics. In this scene the band members are considering the purchase of a keyboard from Rays music shop. To try to get a cheap deal they tell Ray that the keyboard is out of tune. Ray proves the keyboard is in excellent condition by giving an outstanding performance of his song Shake A Tail Feather. Meanwhile, there are people cheering and dancing to the song. They do this in conjunction with the lyrics of the song showing an obvious connection between verbal and non-verbal communication. The hidden message is well received and the Blues brothers purchase the keyboard at full price. Jake Blues may be classified as an aggressive neurotic. Throughout the movie Jake Blues claims that there is nothing to worry about and that he has everything in control. Religion has a big part for this idealized image. This scene is at a gospel church with James Brown acting as the reverend. James Brown gives a tantalizing and hypnotic sermon that opens Jake Blues to the light of God. So the misguided Blues brothers achieved a mission from God and will conquer all obstacles to complete their task, which is to save the orphanage. This mission from God feeds into the aggressive neurotic behavior of Jake Blues. Now that the Blues brothers have gone through this rite of passage they redeem themselves worthy of existence and know they can not fail. Unable to make a mistake because the Lord is on their side. This revelation characterizes a sense of their ideal world.
